The first thing you need to know about how to tiller a bow is that there are two types of timers available. The first type is called the power tiller. The bowyer will have a lever that you use to lower and raise the power tiller which is then attached to the arbor. Bowyer tillers tend to have less weight than those that are operated by hand, but they don’t give you nearly the same range.
The second type of tiller is called the tillerman tiller. The tillerman is similar to the bowyer except you will use a pin to lower and raise the bow. These bows tend to have a little more weight than the bowyer models but some archers prefer them because they offer a better feel while they are in the bow.
The next step on how to tiller a bow is to lift the limbs off the platform. This is where most new hunters make the mistake. While many people are used to pulling back on a bow string, they are wrong when it comes to lifting the limbs. The reason it is wrong is because it puts tension on the limbs and this can cause them to twist or bend in the cross section. Lifting the limbs off of the platform helps prevent any chance of this happening.
To start tilling your own bow, you need to remove the cams. The cams are at the end of the limbs and they are responsible for resisting backspin. The less resistance the better when it comes to tilting your bow. If you are not familiar with how to do this, you would break your arm instead of just pulling back. Also remember that if you don’t remove the cams the string would break and you would be out of a bow.
Next you will need to remove the pins that hold down the string. You would break these pins with your bare hands, so you need an assisted puller. This assisted puller would allow you to lift the string without breaking the tiller. Once you have loosened all the bolts you would need to remove the old string and attach the new one. Make sure you secure it tightly.
When you have removed all of the hardware you can now look at the backings and joints. The backings on most modern made bows are usually made of carbon fiber and they are rectangular in shape. The best way to check to see if the backings are straight is to stand behind the bow and aim the string across the back. If the string rolls straight up and down with no wireless holes or rough spots in the middle of the string then you have straight backed pyramid bows. If the string rolls at an angle in the middle and there are wireless spots in the middle of the string then you probably have inferior quality bows.
To make sure your new bows are completely secure attach them to the backings with a double growth ring. Double growth rings are made of high quality metal and have been specially designed to withstand extreme weather conditions. It is important that the backs are attached correctly because if they don’t the bow can become unstable and you may find yourself needing expensive repairs.
